Specimen: | Nasopharyngeal wash; 3-3 mL
Nasal aspirate; 0.5 mL
Specimens should be submitted in a sterile leak proof container.
Nasopharygeal swab;1 Dacron polyester or cotton-tipped wab with an aluminum wire.
Nasopharyngeal washes and aspirates have been shown to be superior to nasopharyngeal swabs and are the specimens of choice. |
Volume: | Nasopharyngeal wash 2-3mL; Nasal aspirate 0.5 mL |
Minimum Volume: | 700 microL |
Collection: | Transport fresh specimens to the laboratory as soon as possible after collection.
Refrigerate at 2-8°C up to 72 hours; freeze at -20°C if testing is delayed more than 72 hours.
