Alkaline Phosphatase  (ALK PHOS)

Synonyms:  Alkaline phosphatase, serum
Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST (serum separator), Red (no preservative) or Green (lithium heparin) top vacutainer tube.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  100 microL (0.1 mL).
Collection:  If tube other than an SST or PST (plasma separator tube) is collected, transfer serum to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Refrigerate at 2-8°C for 7 days; freeze at -20°C for longer storage.
Rejection Criteria:  Citrate or EDTA plasma; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  0-4 years= 50-235 units/L 4-16 years= 50-370 units/L 16-20 years= 30-200 units/L Greater than 20 years= 40-135 units/L

Test Use:  Measurements of alkaline phosphatase are used in the investigation of hepatobiliary and bone disease.
