Aldolase  (ALDOLASE)

Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST (serum separator), Red (no preservative), Purple (EDTA), Green (heparin), Blue (citrate), or Gray (sodium fluoride) top vacutainer tube.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  Pediatric: 0.5 mL Adult: 2 mL
Collection:  Separate serum or plasma from cells within 30 minutes and transfer to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube for transport. Not removing specimen from clot results in aldolase levels 12% to 46% higher. Refrigerate at 2-8°C up to 5 days; freeze up to 6 months.
Rejection Criteria:  Hemolysis (red cells contain aldolase); improper labeling.
Reference Range:  1.2-7.6 units/L
Methodology:  Kinetic - 340 nm at 37 degrees C
Test Use:  Evaluate muscle wasting processes
Additional Information:  Levels are increased in progressive Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, other dystrophies, dermatomyositis, polio, and trichinosis. Levels are not increased in multiple sclerosis or myasthenia gravis. Abnormal levels can be seen in other disease states.
