VDRL, Cerebrospinal Fluid  (CSF VDRL)

Synonyms:  CSF VDRL
Specimen:  CSF; 1 mL in sterile CSF tube.
                        Volume:  1 mL
Minimum Volume:  0.5 mL CSF
Collection:  Transport specimen to laboratory in a sterile CSF tube. Refrigerate at 2-8°C.
Rejection Criteria:  Hemolysis; gross bacterial contamination; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  Non-reactive
Methodology:  Agglutination
Test Use:  Test for syphilis, neurosyphilis
Additional Information:  A positive VDRL in CSF uncontaminated by serum is esentially diagnostic of neurosyphilis. However, a negative test may occur in 30% of patients with tabes dorsalis.
