Synonyms:
| None listed |
Specimen: | Synovial Fluid; Divide fluid into 3 parts: 5-10 mL into a sterile heparinized tube or syringe for micorbiological studies; 2-5 mL in a sodium heparin or liquid EDTA for microscopic examination and 5 mL into a plain (no anticoagulant) tube and allow to clot. |
Volume: | Ideal: 15 mL of fluid in (3) primary tubes (liquid EDTA , sodium heparin and sterile container). |
Minimum Volume: | 5 mL of Fluid/100 microL serum |
Collection: | Serum Glucose- If tube other than a SST, sodium fluoride or heparinized tube is collected, transfer serum to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube for tranport.
Refrigerate serum/plasma and synovial fluid at 2-8°C for 48 hours.
|
Rejection Criteria: | Specimen submitted in lithium heaprin, oxalate or powdered EDTA tubes or syringes..
Imporoper labeling |
Reference Range: | |
Methodology: | |
Test Use: | Synovial fluid is present in small amount. Any increase in fluid enough to aspirate indicates a disease process. Pathologic synovial fluids are classified by the chemical and physical changes that occur in the joint in the disease process. |
Additional Information: | Crystal examination is available within 24 hours. See Interpretive report with patient results. |
Testing Includes: | Serum Glucose
Fluid Glucose, appearance, WBC and differential, presence of crystals. |
Testing Facility: | AnMed Laboratory |
