Stool for Ova and Parasites  (O&P ST)

Specimen: | Stool: random fresh stool (5 grams or 5 mL) or preserved stool in ParaPak®PVA and Formalin transport system is preferred.
Stool containers and ParaPak® systems are available from AnMed Health Laboratory Services.
Recent recommendations do not emphasize stool analysis times 3. Giardia should be considered. |
Volume: | 5 grams or 5 mL stool |
Minimum Volume: | 3 grams or 3 mL |
Collection: | Transport fresh stool specimens in a clean leakproof container to the laboratory within 2 hours of collection. Preserved specimens using Para-Pak® PVA are stable for 96 hours maintained at room temperature. |
Rejection Criteria: | Barium contamination, aged specimens, improper labeling. |
Reference Range: | No parasites seen |
Methodology: | Formalin concentration and trichrome stain.Microscopic examination of wet preparations. |
Test Use: | Establish the diagnosis of parasitic infestations |
Additional Information: | Optimal diagnostic yield is obtained with exam of fresh, warm stools. |
Testing Includes: | Concentration and examination of specimen for ova and parasites by iodine/saline and trichrome staining. |
