Stool for Leukocytes  (ST WBC)

Synonyms:  Stool for WBC
Specimen:  Stool; 1 gram or 1 mL fresh stool, PVA-preserved stool, or (1) culture swab coated with visible stool material.
                        Volume:  5 gram or 5 mL
Minimum Volume:  1 gm or 1 mL swab accepted only if sufficient quantity of feces visible
Collection:  Submit fresh stool specimen to the laboratory within 1 hour of collection or preserve sample in Para-Pak® PVA system. Submit culturette as soon as possible to the laboratory. Para-Pak® PVA should be maintained at room temperature. Stool containers, culturettes and ParaPak® systems are available from AnMed Health Laboratory Services.
Rejection Criteria:  Formalin fixed; Barium contamination; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  No WBCs seen
Methodology:  Trichrome stain with microscopy
Test Use:  Differentiation of ulcerative colitis and bacillary dysentery from amoebic colitis or viral gastroenteritis
Additional Information:  If STAT determination of stool WBC is needed, order gram stain rather than stool WBC
