Specimen: | Stool; 1 gram or 1 mL fresh stool, PVA-preserved stool, or (1) culture swab coated with visible stool material. |
Volume: | 5 gram or 5 mL |
Minimum Volume: | 1 gm or 1 mL swab accepted only if sufficient quantity of feces visible |
Collection: | Submit fresh stool specimen to the laboratory within 1 hour of collection or preserve sample in Para-Pak® PVA system. Submit culturette as soon as possible to the laboratory.
Para-Pak® PVA should be maintained at room temperature.

Rejection Criteria: | Formalin fixed; Barium contamination; improper labeling. |
Reference Range: | No WBCs seen |
Methodology: | Trichrome stain with microscopy |
Test Use: | Differentiation of ulcerative colitis and bacillary dysentery from amoebic colitis or viral gastroenteritis |
Additional Information: | If STAT determination of stool WBC is needed, order gram stain rather than stool WBC |
