Respiratory Syncytial Virus Antigen  (RSV)

Synonyms:  RSV Antigen
Specimen:  Nasopharyngeal wash; 3-3 mL Nasal aspirate; 0.5 mL Specimens should be submitted in a sterile leak proof container. Nasopharygeal swab;1 Dacron polyester or cotton-tipped wab with an aluminum wire. Nasopharyngeal washes and aspirates have been shown to be superior to nasopharyngeal swabs and are the specimens of choice.
                        Volume:  Nasopharyngeal wash 2-3mL; Nasal aspirate 0.5 mL
Minimum Volume:  700 microL
Collection:  Transport fresh specimens to the laboratory as soon as possible after collection. Refrigerate at 2-8°C up to 72 hours; freeze at -20°C if testing is delayed more than 72 hours.
Storage:  Refrigerate at 2-8 degrees C up to 48 hours
Rejection Criteria:  Swab sample; bloody sample; age of specimen; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  Negative
Methodology:  Immunchromatic assay
Test Use:  Evaluation of lower respiratory tract infections in young children. Direct detection of RSV antigen. Allows rapid diagnosis of the presence of RSV. Particularly useful in children younger than 6 months old, whose antibody response may not be diagnostic
