Specimen: | Blood; SST (serum separator) or Red (no preservative) top vacutainer tube.
OR
Urine; 24 hour collected in a 24 hour urine container. Instruct patient on proper 24 hour urine collection procedure. |
Volume: | Full primary tube or 12 mL urine |
Minimum Volume: | 200 microL serum |
Collection: | If tube other than an SST is collected, transfer serum to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport.
A urine aliquot may be submitted for testing with documentation of 24 hour volume on specimen and request form.
Serum or urine may be refrigerated at 2-8°C for 7 days; freeze for longer storage.

Additional Information: | Immunofixation is automatically performed as follow up testing to abnormal serum or urine protein electrophoresis and is ordered by lab after Pathologist interpretation. It is preferable to order serum protein electrophoresis first. |
Testing Includes: | Routine classification of abnormal monoclonal proteins as IgG, IgM or IgA and kappa or lambda. IgD or IgE done when indicated |
