Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) Culture and Typing  (C HERPES)

Specimen: | Vesicular fluid, ulcerated lesions, pharyngeal and throat swabs, urine, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), autopsy and biopsy material, eye exudates, vaginal swabs.
Place swab, 1 mL fluid or 0.5 grams tissue in Viral Culture media at the time of collection.
Media is available from AnMed Health Laboratory Services.
Specimen is best collected within the first three days after appearance of lesion. |
Volume: | Swab in viral transport media, 1 mL fluid, 0.5 grams tissue in transport medium. |

Collection: | Specimens must be submitted in Viral Culture media.
Keep media refrigerated at 4°C before and after collection.
Specimen should be transported refrigerated to the laboratory within 24 hours of collection.

Rejection Criteria: | Bacterial swab specimen; specimen received in grossly leaking transport container; dry specimen; specimen submitted in fixative or additive; specimen received in expired media or incorrect transport device; age of specimen (72 hours); improper labeling. |

Methodology: | Enzyme-linked cirus-inducible system (ELVIS). Cultures postive by ELVIS are confirmed by immunofluorescent staining. |

Additional Information: | HIV can only rarely be isolated from CSF or patients with HSV 1 encephalitis. The virus is occasionally isolated from spinal fluid of patients with HSV 2 meningitis and or neonates with congenital herpes and from urine from patients with primary genital |
