Specimen: | Amniotic Fluid; 2 mL in a sterile amber tube or any sterile tube protected from light. |

Collection: | Transport to the laboratory as soon as possible. Refrigerate at 4°C for 4 hours.

Rejection Criteria: | Visible blood in fluid; fluid contaminated with urine; improper labeling. |
Reference Range: | Results less than or equal to 39 mg/g indicate immaturity while results between 40-54 mg/g are borderline or transitional. Values greater than or equal to 55 are considered mature. Please note that caution should be used in the evaluation of the FLM as |

Test Use: | Determine pulmonary maturity of the fetus. Quantitative measurement of the ratio of surfactant to Albumin in amniotic fluid for assessment of lung maturity of the fetus. The results are expressed as Surfactant/Albumin ratio. |
