Cancer Antigen (CA) 125  (CA 125)

Synonyms:  CA 125, serum
Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST (serum separator) or Red (no preservative) top vacutainer tube.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  50 microL serum (this does not include repeat testing).
Collection:  If tube other than an SST is collected, transfer serum to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Refrigerate at 2-8°C if not tested within 8 hours; freeze at -20°C for longer storage.
Rejection Criteria:  Plasma; specimens stored at room temperature for more than 8 hours; improper labeling. Body fluids are NOT acceptable to test.
Reference Range:  0-35 U/mL (serum); No reference range for body fluids.

Test Use:  Aid in The test is also intended for use as an aid in the management of ovarian cancer patients with metastatic disease by monitoring the progression or regression of disease in response to treatment.
Additional Information:  It is suggested that assay not be performed until 3 weeks after primary chemotherapy and 2 months after abdominal surgery. CA 125 is most useful in monitoring progression or recurrence in cases of known ovarian cancer. It is not a screening test.
