Calcium, Urine 24-hour  (CALCIUM UR)

Synonyms:  Ca, urine quantitative
Specimen:  Urine; 24 hour urine collected in a 24 hour collection container. Instruct patient on proper 24 hour collection procedure. Urinary calcium results are more meaningful if the patient has been on a low calcium, neutral diet for three days prior to urine collection. Drugs affecting mineral metabolism should be withdrawn, if possible, two to four weeks prior to and during collection; antacids, phosphates, diuretics, glucocorticoids, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, and anticonvulsants.
                        Volume:  Entire collection or 25 mL urine aliquot.
Minimum Volume: 
Collection:  Plastic urine container with 30 mL 6N HCl (preferred). Potassium metabisulfite tablets may be used when 6N HCl is not available. Specimens may be submitted without preservative. pH must be less than 2. Submit 25 mL urine aliquot for testing with documentation of 24 hour volume on specimen and request form. Maintain at room temperature for 7 days.
Rejection Criteria:  Presence of blood in the urine; improper labeling.

Test Use:  Reflects intake rates of intestinal Ca absorption, bone resorption, and renal loss
Additional Information:  Results are more meaningful if patient has been on a low calcium, neutral ash diet for 3 days. Antacids, phosphates, diuretics, glucocorticoids, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, and anticonvulsants withdrawn 2-4 weeks.
