C3  (C3)

Synonyms:  Complement C3, serum
Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST (serum separator) or Red (no preservative) top vacutainer tube. Patient should be fasting.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  300 microL serum
Collection:  If not tested immediately, transfer serum to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube. Freeze at -20°C for up to 3 months.
Rejection Criteria:  Specimens received not frozen; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  85-180 mg/dL
Methodology:  Nephelometry

Additional Information:  In specimens that have not been frozen, the C3 value will increase abnormally due to degradation of C3 to C3c.
