Adrenocorticotropic Hormone  (ACTH)

Synonyms:  ACTH, Adrenal Corticotropin, Corticotropin
Specimen:  Blood; (1) Purple top (EDTA) plastic or siliconized glass vacutainer tube.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  0.3 mL (Note: this does not allow for repeat testing).
Collection:  Collect into iced plastic or siliconized glass Purple (EDTA) top vacutainer tube, noting time of collection. After venipuncture, immediately immerse the tubes in an ice bath. Separate plasma and transfer to a plastic purple screw capped aliquot tube. Freeze specimen immediately.
Rejection Criteria:  Thawed specimen; serum or heparinized plasma, specimen collected in nonsiliconized glass tube; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  6-48 pg/mL
Methodology:  Immunochemiluminometric assay (ICMA)
Test Use:  Pituitary function test useful n the differential diagnosis of Cushing syndrome, etopic ACTH syndrome, Addison disease, hypopituitarism and ACTH-producing pituitary tumors.
