Total Bilirubin, Serum  (BILI TOT)

Synonyms:  Total Bili, serum
Specimen:  Blood: (1) SST (serum separator), Red (no preservative), Green (lithium heparin) or Purple (EDTA) top vacutainer tube. Protect from light.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  100 microL serum/plasma or microtainer
Collection:  If tube other than an SST is collected, transfer serum or plasma to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Bilirubin is extremely photosensitive. Care should be taken to protect sample from light. Refrigerate at 2-8°C for 7 days.
Rejection Criteria:  Gross hemolysis; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  0 - 1 mg/dL
Methodology:  Siemens Vista
Test Use:  Hepatocellular damage - caused from hepatitis or cholestaris, hemolytic diseases, extrahepatic obstructions such as stones or carcinoma, intrahepatic obstructions caused from some drugs, granulomas, cirrhosis or tumors can all cause an increase in bilirub
