Specimen: | Blood; (1) SST (serum separator), Red (no preservative), Green (lithium heparin), or Purple (EDTA) top vacutainer tube.
Protect from light. |
Volume: | Full primary tube |
Minimum Volume: | 200 microL serum/plasma |
Collection: | If tube other than an SST is collected, transfer serum or plasma to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport.
Refrigerate at 2-8°C for 7 days. Protect from light.

Test Use: | Hepatocellular damage - caused from hepatitis or cholestasis, hemolytic diseases, extrahepatic obstructions such as stones or carcinoma, intrahepatic obstructions caused from some drugs, granulomas, cirrhosis or tumors can all cause an increase in bilirub |
Additional Information: | Bilirubin is extremely photosensitive. Care should be taken to protect sample from both daylight and fluorescent light to avoid photodegradation. |
