Bilirubin, Neonatal  (BILI NEO)

Synonyms:  Micro Bilirubin, Total Baby Bilirubin
Specimen:  Blood; (1) full Yellow microtainer (no preservative), SST (serum separator), Red (no preservative), Green (lithium heparin), or Purple (EDTA) top vacutainer tube is acceptable. Protect specimen from light.
                        Volume:  Full microtainer or primary tube
Minimum Volume:  10 microL serum
Collection:  If tube other than a microtainer, or SST is collected, transfer serum or plasma to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Bilirubin is extremely photosensitive. Care should be taken to protect sample from light. Refrigerate at 2-8°C for 7 days.
Rejection Criteria:  Gross hemolysis; improper labeling.

Methodology: 
Test Use:  In infants, even in the absence of disease, the concentration of bilirubin rises after birth and peaks at about the third to fifth day of life. The physiological jaundice of the newborn rarely produces serum bilirubin greater than 5.0 mg/dl. In the neonat
Additional Information:  Bilirubin is extremely photosensitive. Care should be taken to protect sample from both daylight and fluorescent light to avoid photodegradation.
