Wet Prep for Yeast  (WET PR VAG)

Synonyms:  Vaginal Wet Mount
Specimen:  Vaginal secretions or urethral discharge. Inpatients- place specimen directly on slide and coverslip. Outpatients- submit swab in a clean container with 1 mL of saline.
                        Volume:  1 mL or 1 swab
Minimum Volume:  500 microL
Collection:  Transport to the laboratory immediately after collection. Maintain specimen at room temperature; Do Not refrigerate.
Rejection Criteria:  Dried slide; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  No yeast or trichomonas; No significant number of clue cells
Methodology:  Microscopy
Test Use:  Detection of Trichomonas vaginalis, or significant numbers of yeast or clue cells
Additional Information:  T. vaginalis is identifiable by motility, and motility diminishes rapidly. Immediate transport of specimen and performance of test is critical
Testing Includes:  Evaluation of specimen for presence of Trichomonas vaginalis, yeast, WBC, and clue cells.
