Wet Prep for Yeast (WET PR VAG)

| Specimen: | Vaginal secretions or urethral discharge.
Inpatients- place specimen directly on slide and coverslip.
Outpatients- submit swab in a clean container with 1 mL of saline. |
| Volume: | 1 mL or 1 swab |
| Minimum Volume: | 500 microL |
| Collection: | Transport to the laboratory immediately after collection. Maintain specimen at room temperature; Do Not refrigerate. |
| Rejection Criteria: | Dried slide; improper labeling. |
| Reference Range: | No yeast or trichomonas; No significant number of clue cells |
| Methodology: | Microscopy |
| Test Use: | Detection of Trichomonas vaginalis, or significant numbers of yeast or clue cells |
| Additional Information: | T. vaginalis is identifiable by motility, and motility diminishes rapidly. Immediate transport of specimen and performance of test is critical |
| Testing Includes: | Evaluation of specimen for presence of Trichomonas vaginalis, yeast, WBC, and clue cells. |
