Urine Protein Electrophoresis  (PROT EL UR)

Specimen:  Urine: 24 hour urine collection in a 24 hour container or any chemically clean container. Patient should be instructed how to collect a 24 hour urine. First morning specimen is acceptable (60 mL sample).
                        Volume:  60 mL urine
Minimum Volume:  12 mL urine
Collection:  Transport 24-hour urine or 60 mL aliquot to the laboratory as soon as possible. Urine aliquot may be submitted with documentation of 24-hour volume. Refrigerate at 2-8°C.
Rejection Criteria:  Improper labeling.
Reference Range:  Normal
Methodology:  Electrophoresis
Test Use:  Detection of Bence-Jones proteinuria; classification of urine protein
Additional Information:  A serum protein electrophoresis should be ordered concurrently if one has not been recently studied. If abnormal protein is detected immunofixation will be performed.
