Treponema pallidum Antibodies (FTA - ABS)  (FTA - ABS)

Synonyms:  FTA - Abs; Fluorescent Treponemal Antibody Absorption Test
Specimen:  Blood:(1) SST (serum separator) or Red (no preservative) top vacutainer tube.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  0.5 mL serum
Collection:  If tube other than an SST is collected, transfer serum to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Maintain specimen at room temperature.
Rejection Criteria:  Hemolysis, lipemia, gross bacterial contamination, improper labeling.
Reference Range:  Nonreactive
Methodology:  Indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA)
Test Use:  Confirm diagnosis of syphilis
Additional Information:  FTA antibodies should not be used to follow disease activity or response to treatment since they will remain elevated for life. False positive results have been associated with increased or abnormal globulins, antinuclear antibodies, pregnancy, HSV infec
