Stool for pH  (PH ST)

Synonyms:  None listed
Specimen:  Stool: 5 grams or 5 mL fresh specimen in a clean leak-proof container. Preserved specimens are unacceptable.
                        Volume:  5 gm or 5 mL
Minimum Volume:  0.5 gm or 0.5 mL
Collection:  Transport to the laboratory within 2 hours of collection if kept at room temperature. Refrigerate at 2-8° C if greater than 2 hours.
Rejection Criteria:  Preserved stool, aged specimen, improper labeling, specimen contaminated with urine, specimen on outside of container.
Reference Range:  Actual pH reported
Methodology:  Nitrazine (pH) paper
Test Use:  Determination of etiology of diarrhea
Additional Information:  Intolerance to monosaccharide and disaccharide sugar lowers stool pH, and may also result in presence of fat and reducing substances in stool
