Stool for Ova and Parasites  (O&P ST)

Synonyms:  O & P, Ova & Parasite exams
Specimen:  Stool: random fresh stool (5 grams or 5 mL) or preserved stool in ParaPak®PVA and Formalin transport system is preferred. Stool containers and ParaPak® systems are available from AnMed Health Laboratory Services. Recent recommendations do not emphasize stool analysis times 3. Giardia should be considered.
                        Volume:  5 grams or 5 mL stool
Minimum Volume:  3 grams or 3 mL
Collection:  Transport fresh stool specimens in a clean leakproof container to the laboratory within 2 hours of collection. Preserved specimens using Para-Pak® PVA are stable for 96 hours maintained at room temperature.
Rejection Criteria:  Barium contamination, aged specimens, improper labeling.
Reference Range:  No parasites seen
Methodology:  Formalin concentration and trichrome stain.Microscopic examination of wet preparations.
Test Use:  Establish the diagnosis of parasitic infestations
Additional Information:  Optimal diagnostic yield is obtained with exam of fresh, warm stools.
Testing Includes:  Concentration and examination of specimen for ova and parasites by iodine/saline and trichrome staining.
