Stool For Fat  (FAT ST)

Synonyms:  Fecal Fat, Qualitative
Specimen:  Stool; 5 grams or 5 mL of fresh stool in a clean leak proof container. This is a qualitative test and is performed on a random specimen. Quantitative measurement of fecal fat requires collection of a 72 hour stool specimen.
                        Volume:  5 gm or 5 mL
Minimum Volume:  1 gm or 1 mL
Collection:  Transport specimen to the laboratory as soon as possible. Maintain at room temperature or refrigerate at 2-8°C if testing is delayed significantly.
Rejection Criteria:  Preserved stool; Barium contamination; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  Total fats: <100 droplets/HPF; Neutral Fats: <60 droplets HPF
Methodology:  Microscopy with Sudan III stain
Test Use:  Aid in the diagnosis of steatorrhea
