Serum Protein Electrophoriesis, Serum  (PROT EL SER)

Synonyms:  TPE, SPE, SPEP
Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST (serum separator) or Red (no preservative) top vacutainer tube.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  800 microL serum
Collection:  If tube othern than a SST is collected, transfer serum to a tightly capped plastice aliquot tube for transport. Refrigerate at 2-8°C for 7 days; freeze at -20°C for 6 weeks. If monoclonal protein is detected, immunofixation will be performed. If protein abnormalities are detected, immunoglobulins will be measured.
Rejection Criteria:  Hemolysis; lipemia; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  Normal levels of all fractions
Methodology:  Electrophoresis
Test Use:  Detection of monoclonal gammopathies/other protein abnormalities
Additional Information:  If monoclonal protein is detected, immunofixation will be performed. If protein abnormalities are detected, immunoglobulins will be measured.
