Rotavirus Stool  (ROTAVIRUS)

Synonyms:  None listed
Specimen:  Stool; submit in a clean leak proof container OR (1) culture swab with visible stool sample. Collect as soon as possible after onset of symptoms.
                        Volume:  2 mL stool OR (1) culture swab with visible stool.
Minimum Volume:  0.4 microL
Collection:  If test cannot be run immediately, specimen should be refrigerated at 2-8°C up to 48 hours; freeze at -20C for longer storage or if testing is delayed more than 48 hours.
Rejection Criteria:  Incorrect storage; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  Negative
Methodology:  Membrane - based immunogold assay
Test Use:  Detect rotavirus antigen in stool of patient with suspected viral gastroenteritis
Additional Information:  Rotavirus is a common cause of pediatric gastroenteritis. The illness is most common in winter.
Testing Includes:  Qualitative detection of Rotavirus antigens in stool.
