Prolactin  (PROLACTIN)

Synonyms:  PRL
Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST (serum separator) or Red (no preservative) top vacutainer tube.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  1 mL serum
Collection:  If tube other than an SST is collected, transfer serum to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Refrigerate at 2-8°C for 48 hours; freeze for longer storage.
Rejection Criteria:  Improper labeling.
Reference Range:  Males= 2.1-17.7 ng/mL Females (nonpregnant)= 2.8-29.2 ng/mL
Methodology: 
Test Use:  First test for work-up of inappropriate lactation. Also useful in detecting prolactin secreting pituitary gland tumors.
Additional Information:  Values may run higher in pregnancy.
