Specimen: | Blood; (1) SST (serum separator) or Red (no preservative) top vacutainer tube. |
Volume: | Full primary tube |
Minimum Volume: | 1 mL serum |
Collection: | If tube other than an SST is collected, transfer serum to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport.
Refrigerate at 2-8°C for 48 hours; freeze for longer storage.

Rejection Criteria: | Improper labeling. |
Reference Range: | Males= 2.1-17.7 ng/mL Females (nonpregnant)= 2.8-29.2 ng/mL |

Test Use: | First test for work-up of inappropriate lactation. Also useful in detecting prolactin secreting pituitary gland tumors. |
Additional Information: | Values may run higher in pregnancy. |
