Porphyrin Screen  (PORPHYRIN)

Synonyms:  Uroporphyrin, Coproporphyrin
Specimen:  Urine; random 2 mL in a urine container protected from light.
                        Volume:  2 mL urine
Minimum Volume:  1.5 mL urine
Collection:  Submit urine in an amber colored container or wrap completely in tin foil. Refrigerate 1t 2-8°C.
Rejection Criteria:  Stored specimen not refrigerated; specimen exposed to light; acid preservative; pH less than 3; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  Negative
Methodology:  High-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorometric detection.
Test Use:  Diagnosis of porphyrias
Additional Information:  Clinician may elect to order a 24 hour urine quantitation if screen is positive.
Testing Includes:  Specimen sent to LabCorp. LabCorp test # 120980. Coproporphyrins I and III; uroporphyrins; hepatocarboxylporphyrins; hexacarboxylporphyrins; pentacarboxylporphyrins.
