Platelet Function Screen  (PLT FUNC)

Synonyms:  Screen for platelet function
Specimen:  Blood; (1) Purple (EDTA) top vacutainer tube and (2) Blue (3.2% sodium citrate) top vacutainer tubes. Venipuncture should be performed using a 21G or larger needle. Obtain patient's medication history before the venipuncture, including time of last dose. Specifically ask if aspirin or aspirin containing products have been ingested in the last 36 hours (informatin for in-patients will be obtained by testing department).
                        Volume:  (2) full Blue primary tubes and (1) full Purple primary tube.
Minimum Volume:  3.5 ml blue primary tube and 2 lavandar microtainers
Collection:  Specimens cannot be sent to the laboratory via the pneumatic tube system. All samples should be stabilized during transport in a rack or holder with an "up" arrow on container to keep specimens from being inverted after collection. Samples must be stored at room temperature and are stable for 4 hours.
Rejection Criteria:  Clotted; hemolysis; insufficiently filled tube; improper labeling.

Additional Information:  Abnormal Collagen/Epinephrine and Collagen/ADP results will require additional testing - patient recollect and specimen referred to GMH for PLT aggregation testing.
