Phenobarbital  (PHENOBARB)

Synonyms:  None listed
Specimen:  Blood, (1) Red (no preservative) top vacutainer tube. Draw trough levels prior to dose or at least 6 hours after last dose. Include last dose information on request.
                        Volume:  7 mL primary tube
Minimum Volume:  200 microL serum
Collection:  If SST (serum separator tube) is collected, spearate serum from cells within one hour of collection. Transfer serum to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube for transport. Serum samples may be stored up to 2 days at room temperature or refrigerated at 2-8°C; freeze for up to 3 months.
Rejection Criteria:  Incorrect specimen type; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  Therapeutic 15-40 mcg/mL Toxic- greater than 40 mcg/mL
Methodology:  Siemens Vista®
Test Use:  Phenobarbital is indicated for generalized tonic-clonic and partial seizures. It is also used for febrile seizures in children and for treatment of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia.
Additional Information:  If drawn in a serum separator tube, remove serum from gel within one hour.
