Specimen:  Stool; 72 hour loose stool collection. The metal container used for this collection is available from AnMed Health Laboratory Services.
                        Volume:  Dependent on consistancy of specimen, 5 mL supernatant needed
Minimum Volume:  1 mL
Collection:  Transport the 72 hour collection to the laboratory as soon as possible after collection ends. Maintain at room temperature.
Rejection Criteria:  Formed stool; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  None
Methodology:  Fiske Osmometer
Test Use:  Distinction of osmotic from nonosmotic secretory diarrhea. A large deficit (>50M OSM/Kg) in the calculated osmolabity (twice the sum of the stoool for sodium and stool for potassium) from the measured stool osmolality indicates osmotis diarrhea.
