Muscle Biopsy  (MUSCLE BX)

Specimen:  Muscle; typically triceps, biceps, or vastus lateralis Transport biopsy to the laboratory immediately after collection at room temperature.
                        Volume:  1 x 2 cm sample
Minimum Volume: 
Collection:  Fresh muscle biopsy must be received in Histology Monday through Thursday.
Rejection Criteria:  Improper labeling; age of specimen.
Reference Range:  See report
Methodology:  Histochemistry, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy
Test Use:  Diagnosis of muscle diseases
Additional Information:  Muscle sent should not be traumatized by injections or electromyographic studies. Specimens cannot be sent on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
Testing Includes:  Histochemistry- Immunofluorescence and/or electron microscopy performed when indicated.
