Luteinizing Hormone  (LH)

Synonyms:  LH
Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST (serum separator) or Red (no preservative) top vacutainer tube.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  200 microL serum
Collection:  If tube other than an SST is collected, transfer serum to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Stable at room tmeperature for 8 days; refrigerate at 2-8°C for 14 days; freeze for longer storage.
Rejection Criteria:  Improper labeling.

Methodology:  Direct chemiluminometric
Test Use:  The primary clinical use of LH measurement is in evaluating the normalacy of the hypthalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Measurement of serum gonadotropin levels will allow for distinguishing between primary gonadal failure and deficient gonadal stimulation.
