Lipase  (LIPASE)

Synonyms:  None listed
Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST (serum separator), Red (no preservative) or Green (lithium heparin) top vacutainer tube.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  100 microL serum/plasma
Collection:  If tube other than an SST is collected, transfer serum or plasma to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Refrigerate at 2-8 °C for 7 days; freeze at -20°C for up to 1 year.
Rejection Criteria:  Severe hemolysis; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  73-393 units/L
Methodology:
Test Use:  Lipase is elevated with amylase in acute pancreatitis. Lipase is more specific for pancreatitis than is serum Amylase; diagnose peritonitis, strangulated or infarcted bowel, pancreatis cyst. Serum lipase is usually round in patients with elevated serum
Additional Information:  Urine samples are inappropriate for lipase as it is usually absent from urine, possibly from inactivation of the enzyme. EDTA, potassium oxalate, sodium fluoride and citrate have been shown to inhibit lipase results and should not be used.
Testing Includes:  Quantitative measurement of lipase.
Testing Facility:  AnMed Laboratory
