Lead, Blood (Pediatric)  (LEAD PEDS)

Synonyms:  Lead
Specimen:  Blood; (1) Royal blue-top (EDTA) top vacutainer tube. Microtainerâ„¢ results may be artificially elevated due to skin surface contamination. Venipuncture is preferred. For capillary puncture, wash skin surface thoroughly to minimize contamination.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  500 microL (Microtainer)
Collection:  Maintain specimen at room temperature and submit original tube for testing.
Rejection Criteria:  Contaminated specimen due to improper cleaning of puncture site; clotted or QNS sample; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  Environmental exposure: 0-15 years: 0-9 ug/dL
Methodology:  Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS)
Test Use:  Monitor exposure to lead in children younger than 16 years
Additional Information:  Patient Prep: Prior to collections, wash hands with soap and water, dry with a white lint free towel. Avoid colored and recycled paper towels which may contain lead. Prepare your "field" for supplies by laying out a clean, white paper towel on a table
