Lactic Acid (Lactate)  (LACTIC ACID)
|
Synonyms:
| Lactate |
Specimen: | Blood; (1) Gray (sodium fluoride/ potassium oxalate) top vacutainer tube.
Patient should be fasting and at complete rest.
Chill specimen immediately after collection. |
Volume: | Full primary tube |
Minimum Volume: | 100 microL plasma |
Collection: | Separate plasma from cells within 15 minutes of collection and transfer to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube for transport.
Refrigerate at 2-8°C for 24 hours; freeze at -20°C for 1 month. |
Rejection Criteria: | Hemolysis; improper labeling. |
Reference Range: | 0.4 - 2.0 mmol/L |
Methodology: | |
Test Use: | Hypoperfusion is the most common cause of lactic acidosis and hyperlactacidemia may be the only marker of tissue hypoperfusion. Lactic acid is used to evaluate metabolic acidosis, regional or diffuse tissue hypoperfusion, hypoxia, shock, congestive heart |
Additional Information: | Infusions that modify the acid/base balance may cause elevation in lactate levels that may not be related to hypoxia. |
Testing Includes: | Quantitative measurement of lactic acid. |
Testing Facility: | AnMed Laboratory |
