KOH Preparation  (KOH PREP)

Specimen: | Endoscopy material, aspirate, body fluid, hair, skin, nails, tissue, respiratory specimens.
Transport specimen in a sterile leak proof container. |
Volume: | 5 mL of fluid or sputum, several small samples of other materials. |
Minimum Volume: | 1 mL of fluid or sputum, available samples of other materials. |
Collection: | Endoscopy or other small specimens may be placed directly on a slide in KOH.
Transport specimen to the laboratory as soon as possible.
Maintain at room temperature. |
Rejection Criteria: | Insufficient sample; improper labeling. |
Reference Range: | No fungal elements seen |
Methodology: | Microscopy with KOH |
Test Use: | Determine the presence or absence of fungal elements in specimens by direct exam |
Additional Information: | Use aseptic technique for collection |
