KOH Preparation  (KOH PREP)

Synonyms:  Wet prep for fungal elements
Specimen:  Endoscopy material, aspirate, body fluid, hair, skin, nails, tissue, respiratory specimens. Transport specimen in a sterile leak proof container.
                        Volume:  5 mL of fluid or sputum, several small samples of other materials.
Minimum Volume:  1 mL of fluid or sputum, available samples of other materials.
Collection:  Endoscopy or other small specimens may be placed directly on a slide in KOH. Transport specimen to the laboratory as soon as possible. Maintain at room temperature.
Rejection Criteria:  Insufficient sample; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  No fungal elements seen
Methodology:  Microscopy with KOH
Test Use:  Determine the presence or absence of fungal elements in specimens by direct exam
Additional Information:  Use aseptic technique for collection
Testing Includes:  Microscopy examination for fungal elements
