Iron  (IRON)

Synonyms:  Fe
Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST (serum separator), Red (no preservative) or Green (lithium heparin) top vacutainer tube.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  100 microL (0.1 ml)
Collection:  If tube other than an SST is collected, transfer serum or plasma to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Refrigerate at 2-8°C for 7 days.
Rejection Criteria:  Hemolysis; icteric samples; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  Adult: 50-175 microg/dL Pediatric: See report
Methodology: 
Test Use:  Differential diagnoses of anemia, especially with Lypochromia and/or low MCV. Usual causes of depleted Iron stores include blood loss, inadequate dietary iron. Serum Ferrita decrease in the earliest indicator of iron deficiency if inflammation is absent
