Insulin  (INSULIN)

Synonyms:  Insulin; Immunoreactive Insulin
Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST (serum separator), Red (no preservative) or Green (Lithium Heparin) top vacutainer tube. PLEASE NOTE: If a green top tube is submitted, not all chemistry tests can be added to this specimen type.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  0.6 mL serum
Collection:  If tube other than an SST or green top is collected, transfer serum to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Refrigerate at 2-8°C.
Rejection Criteria:  EDTA plasma specimen; hemolyzed specimen, improper labeling.

Methodology:  Electrochemilunonetric assay
Test Use:  The primary clinical utility of insulin measurement is in the evaluation of patients with fasting hypoglycemia. Insulin levels can be useful predictin susceptibility to the developemnt of type II diabetes.
