Amylase  (AMYLASE)

Synonyms:  Amylase
Specimen:  Blood; Preferred: (1) PST (green top Lithium heparin). Alternate: (1) SST (serum separator) or Red (no preservative)
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  100 microL (0.1 mL)
Collection:  If tube other than a PST (plasma separator tube) or SST or is collected, transfer serum or plasma to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Refrigerate at 2-8°C for 7 days; freeze at -20°C for longer storage.
Rejection Criteria:  Improper labeling.
Reference Range:  25 - 100 Units/L
Methodology: 
Test Use:  Used primarily for the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatitis. This anylase method, responds to both pancreatic and salivary anylase isoenzymes.
Additional Information:  Amylase is useful in the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis; it is desirable to support the clinical significance of elevated serum/plasma lipase. About 80% of patients with acute pancreatitis have elevated amylase within the first 24 hours. Both amylase a
