HIV - Antibody Test  (HIV)

Synonyms:  Anti-HIV-1/2, HIV AB (NSP)
Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST (serum separator), Red (no preservative), Green (lithium heparin) or Purple (EDTA) top vacutainer tube.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  2 mL serum/plasma
Collection:  If tube other than an SST is collected, transfer serum or plasma to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Refrigerate at 2-8°C for 2 days; freeze at -10°C for longer storage.
Rejection Criteria:  Lipemic; icteric; hemolyzed; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  Negative
Methodology:  Enzyme immunoassay
Test Use:  Detects antibodies to HIV-1 and/or HIV-2 to screen patients with symptoms or exposure to AIDS
Additional Information:  Reactive test will be confirmed by Western Blot (Sent to Reference Lab).
