Hepatitis B Surface Antigen  (HBSAG)

Synonyms:  HBsAg
Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST (serum separator tube) or Red (no preservative) top vacutainer tube.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube.
Minimum Volume:  194 microL
Collection:  If tube other than an SST is collected, transfer serum to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Refrigerate at 2-8 °C for 48 hours; freeze at -20°C for longer storage.
Rejection Criteria:  Improper labeling.
Reference Range:  Negative
Methodology:  Microparticle enzyme immunoassay (MEIA)
Test Use:  Detects acute or chronic Hepatitis B or carrier state
Additional Information:  Reactive test should be confirmed by neutralyzation confirmatory test sent to Reference Lab or presence of anti-HBc and/or anti-HBs. HbsAg Positive: This indicates either acute or chronic active infection with Hepatitis B. Following immunologic recovery
