Glucose Tolerance, 5 hour  (GTT 5HR)

Specimen: | Blood, (1) SST (serum separator), Red (no preservative), Green (lithium heparin)or Gray (sodium fluoride and potassium oxalate) top vacutainer tube.
Label tubes with collection times.
A fasting glucose is drawn and analyzed. If the fasting glucose does not exceed 140 mg/dL, a 75 gram glucose drink is administered for adults (1.75 g/kg of body weight for children).
After completion of the drink, collect specimens at intervals of 30 minutes, 1 hour, 1 1/2 hour, 2 hour, 3 hour, 4 and 5 hour |

Collection: | If tube other than an SST or PST (plasma separator tube) is collected, transfer serum or plasma to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube for transport.
Refrigerate at 2-8°C for 7 days; sodium fluoride and potassium oxalate is stable at room temperature for 24 hours.
