Glucose  (GLU)

Synonyms:  Blood Sugar, Blood Glucose, FBS
Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST (serum separator), Red (no preservative), Green (lithium heparin) or Gray (sodium flouride and potassium oxalate) top vacutainer tube. Urine; random or 24 hour collection. Patient should be instructed how to collect a 24 hour urine if ordered. CSF; collect in a sterile CSF tube.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube for blood or leak proof specimen container for fluids.
Minimum Volume:  100 microL plasma/serum
Collection:  If tube other than an SST or PST (plasma separator tube)is collected, transfer serum or plasma to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube for transport within 2 hours of collection. Refrigerate serum, plasma, urine and CSF samples at 2-8°C for 7 days; sodium fluoride and potassium oxalate is stable at room temperature for 24 hours.
Rejection Criteria:  Gross hemolysis; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  Fasting 70-110 mg/dL
Methodology: 
Test Use:  Glucose is the primary test to evaluate risk of diabetes, to establish the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus and to monitor therapy and support control of diabetes.
