Fungus Smear  (FUNGUS SMR)

Synonyms:  Fungus Stain
Specimen:  Aspirate, biopsy, sputum, bronchial washing, or tissue. 2 grams of tissue or 5 mL fluid submitted in a sterile leak proof container. State specific source and avoid the use of swabs for collection.
                        Volume:  2 grams tissue; 5 mL fluid
Minimum Volume:  1 mL or 1 gm
Collection:  Transport to the laboratory as soon as possible. Maintain at room temperature, do not refrigerate.
Rejection Criteria:  Improper labeling.
Reference Range:  No fungal elements seen
Methodology:  Microscopy
Test Use:  Determine presence or absence of fungal elements in specimens by direct examination
Additional Information:  Use sterile preparation and avoid contamination of specimen with commensal organisms. Avoid use of swabs. Fibers can introduce artifacts making interpretation more difficult.
