Folate  (FOLATE)

Synonyms:  Folic Acid
Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST (serum separator) or Red (no preservative) top vacutainer tube. Patient should be fasting.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  300 microL serum
Collection:  If tube other than an SST is collected, transfer serum to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Refrigerate at 2-8°C up to 48 hours; freeze at -20°C for longer storage.
Rejection Criteria:  Hemolysis; incorrect specimen type; quantity not sufficient for testing; improper labeling.
Reference Range:  5-24 ng/mL

Test Use:  Detect folate deficiency: monitor therapy with folate; evaluate megalobastic and macrocytic anemia; evaluate alcoholic patients and those with prior jejunoileal Bypass for morbid obsesity or those with intestinal blind-loop syndrome. May be decreased in
