Electrolytes  (LYTES)

Synonyms:  Chem4, Lytes
Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST (serum separator), Red (no preservative), or Green (lithium heparin) top vacutainer tube OR Urine; random 10 mL or timed specimen in a urine collection container.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube; 24 hour urine volume or random urine container with 5 mL volume.
Minimum Volume:  100 microL plasma/serum; 1 mL urine
Collection:  If tube other than an SST is collected, transfer serum or plasma to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Regrigerate at 2-8°C.
Rejection Criteria:  Hemolysis; improper labeling.

Test Use: 
Additional Information:  24 hour urine specimens for sodium, potassium or chloride should be without addition of preservatives. Chloride may be performed on CSF.
Testing Includes:  Quantitative measurement of sodium, potassium, chloride and CO2.
