D - Xylose Absorption  (D-XYLOSE)

Specimen:  Blood; (1) Gray (sodium flouride) top vacutainer tube. Patient must be fasting. After collection of first sample, patients are administered an oral liquid dose of D-Xylose. A 5 hour timed urine is collected beginning at the time of ingestion. Obtain one, two, three, four, and five hour samples postdose.
                        Volume:  Urine -10 mL and Blood - full primary tube
Minimum Volume: 
Collection:  Outpatients are scheduled through First Call (864)512-2252. Maintain urine at room temperature and refrigerate blood at 2-8°C.
Rejection Criteria:  Patient vomits; plasma not refrigerated; stool in urine; improper labeling.

Additional Information:  Fasting and 1-hour post dose blood specimen collected on children. Fasting and 2-hour blood specimen collected on adults. A 5-hour timed urine collection is done on both. Adults received 25 g dose of D-Xylose; children receive a weight based dosage. C
