D - Xylose Absorption  (D-XYLOSE)

Specimen: | Blood; (1) Gray (sodium flouride) top vacutainer tube.
Patient must be fasting.
After collection of first sample, patients are administered an oral liquid dose of D-Xylose.
A 5 hour timed urine is collected beginning at the time of ingestion.
Obtain one, two, three, four, and five hour samples postdose. |

Maintain urine at room temperature and refrigerate blood at 2-8°C. |
Rejection Criteria: | Patient vomits; plasma not refrigerated; stool in urine; improper labeling. |

Additional Information: | Fasting and 1-hour post dose blood specimen collected on children. Fasting and 2-hour blood specimen collected on adults. A 5-hour timed urine collection is done on both. Adults received 25 g dose of D-Xylose; children receive a weight based dosage. C |
