Catecholamines, Fractionated, Urinary Free  (CATECHO UR)

Synonyms:  Urinary epinephrine; urinary norepinephrine; urinary dopamine
Specimen:  Urine; 24 hour urine collection in a 24 hour container with 30 mL 6N HCl preservative. Caution: Strong acid. May cause skin burns. Instruct patient on proper 24 hour urine collection procedure and to keep collection on ice.
                        Volume:  30 mL aliquot
Minimum Volume:  4 mL
Collection:  A 30 mL aliquot may be submitted with documentation of 24 hour volume on specimen and request form. pH must be less than 5. Refrigerate specimen at 2-8°C.
Rejection Criteria:  Specimen not kept chilled; specimen with no preservative; pH not less than 3; improper labeling.

Methodology:  Liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS)
Test Use:  Work up neuroblastoma. Diagnose pheochromocytoma. Work up palpitation, severe headache, diaphoresis.
Additional Information:  Assay is of most value for pheochromocytoma when specimen is collected during a hypertensive episode. False negatives and false positives do occur.
