Albumin, Quantitative  (ALBUMIN)

Synonyms:  Albumin, serum
Specimen:  Blood; (1) SST (serum separator), Red (no preservative) or Green (lithium heparin) top vacutainer tube. Fasting specimen preferred.
                        Volume:  Full primary tube
Minimum Volume:  100 microL serum/plasma or microtainer
Collection:  If tube other than an SST or PST (plasma separator tube) is collected, transfer serum or plasma to a tightly capped plastic aliquot tube within 2 hours of collection for transport. Refrigerate at 2-8°C for 7 days.
Rejection Criteria:  Improper labeling.
Reference Range:  0-4 days= 2.8 to 4.4 g/dL Greater than 4 days= 3.3 to 4.9 g/dL
Methodology: 
Test Use:  Evaluation of nutritional status, blood oncotic pressure, renal disease with proteinuria and other chronic diseases.
Additional Information:  Measurements of albumin are used in the diagnosis and treatment of numerous diseases involving primarily the liver or kidneys.
Testing Includes:  Quantitative measurement of albumin.
